Understanding Cost of Attendance
The cost of attendance (COA) is an estimate of your total educational expenses for a year. It goes beyond just tuition and fees, and factors in standard costs for items like:
- Books and supplies
- Housing and food
- Transportation
- Personal expenses
These budgets are set by the University of Hawai‘i System and updated annually. They help determine your eligibility for financial aid.
Additional Expenses You May Qualify For:
- Specific course materials for your major (upon request)
- Documented childcare costs
- Travel allowance for neighbor island students
- Disability-related educational expenses (not covered by other aid)
How to Request Additional Costs:
If you have these additional expenses, please complete the Request for Cost of Attendance Adjustments form to see if they can be factored into your financial aid award for the Federal Direct Loan Program

Resident = $131 per credit
Non-Resident = $ 345 per credit
Summer Tuition
Resident = $131 per credit

The table below represents the Cost of Attendance for one semester (Fall or Spring semester)
Effective Fall 2024, the University of Hawaii campuses will charge In-state/Resident tuition to students who are citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau. Citizens from American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Cook Islands, Futuna, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Wallis will continue to be assessed the Non-Resident Pacific Island Jurisdiction tuition rate.
For students not already covered under Section B above, citizens from a Pacific Island district, commonwealth, territory, or insular jurisdiction, state or nation (collectively, “Pacific Island jurisdictions”) which provides no public higher education institution granting baccalaureate degrees, are charged 150 percent of the resident tuition rate. For citizens from Pacific Island jurisdictions that have a public higher education institution but it does not offer a program that is desired by the student and is offered at the University of Hawai‘i, the 150 percent of the resident rate may be applied for participation in the specified program at a specified campus upon written agreement by that institution and the university. The president or designee updates and distributes the list of eligible Pacific Island jurisdictions.
