Getting Started

Students who plan to transfer are strongly recommended to meet with their academic advisor/counselor, a Transfer Specialist, or Kaʻieʻie Transfer Advisor to discuss a transfer plan.
Meet with an academic advisor/counselor, Kaʻieʻie Transfer Advisor/Transfer Specialist, to determine the recommended time to transfer. There are multiple factors to consider when making a decision such as travel/moving off-island, academics, finances, mental readiness, and personal work/life balance.

A student can transfer with or without an associate degree who meets the eligibility requirements for a transfer student (Kaʻieʻie Transfer, Auto Admit, or a Standard Transfer).

Yes, you can! Check with your advisor or counselor if you are eligible for a reverse transfer and can meet the graduation requirements for an associate’s degree at Kauaʻi CC using credits earned at a UH four-year campus.

Applying

Students who join the UH Mānoa Kaʻieʻie Program or accept their UH Auto Admission offer do not need to reapply to UH. Standard transfer students should apply online.

After the student's transfer application is processed, an official transcript evaluation will be completed. The UH Transfer database is a tool that can be used as a guide to search how your previous courses transfer to UH campuses. Since entrance requirements and the acceptance of transfer courses differ for the various baccalaureate programs, we recommend that you consult with an academic advisor to familiarize yourself with the requirements of the colleges and your field of study.

Courses and credits earned by a recipient of a University of Hawai‘i Associate in Arts (AA) Degree are accepted as fulfilling the lower division general education core (basic/area or foundations/diversification) requirements at all University of Hawai‘i baccalaureate degree-granting institutions. Effective Fall 2024, if a student's Foundation and/or Diversification requirements have been met at one UH institution, STAR will automatically propagate that information to all other UH institutions the student transfers to.

A minimum 2.0 GPA residents, 2.5 GPA non-residents (on a 4.0 scale) to transfer to a UH University. Professional programs and other programs with selective admissions (e.g. education, engineering, nursing, social work) may have higher GPA and prerequisite requirements. Please check with the appropriate program for more information.
Check the program sheet for your major to see what the submission date(s) is (are) as it may vary by program (both Fall and Spring, just Fall, or on odd or even years, for example).

Classes with a D grade or higher will transfer to a UH University. However, classes that are required for your program major generally require a C grade or higher. Professional programs or selective admission programs may have very specific grade requirements to apply to the program. It is important to meet with an advisor or counselor to plan early and to avoid having to retake classes when you transfer.

Every student’s educational journey is unique. Generally a student attending full-time (15 credits a semester) can expect to finish an associates degree in two years (4 semesters) at a community college. Students attending school part-time do take longer to finish their degree. It is recommended that students meet with an advisor to develop an academic plan for their chosen pathway.

Students who are planning to transfer to a University to complete a bachelor's degree can plan on attending school an additional two years or longer.
Check with your advisor as some programs only offer a full-time or part-time schedule, while others may offer both options and allow students to finish at their own pace.

Cost and Housing

UH Mānoa and UH Hilo offer on-campus housing or dorms. UH West Oʻahu and Maui College do not offer on-campus housing. UH West Oʻahu suggests nearby accommodations on the neighboring campus of Hawaiʻi Tokai International College. Alternatively, many students live at home with parents or off-campus housing.
You can take classes at one of the seven UH community colleges that would be the same courses you would be taking as a freshman and sophomore at a four-year University or College and at a more affordable cost. However, students in an articulated degree pathway must graduate from Kauaʻi CC with the articulated pathway degree to be eligible for the benefits of the transfer agreement. If not, students will be required to meet catalog requirements in place upon admission to the UH campus. Generally a notation will be placed in the advisor notes in STAR which identifies associate degree students intending to transfer to a UH 4-year institution who are in the process of completing an associate degree and are part of an articulation agreement or transfer pathway. Check with an advisor or counselor for the specific articulated degree pathway requirements that apply to you.
