About TSETS: E Kūkulu Ke Kahua a Pa‘a

Collaboration between the University of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i Community College, and TSETS aims to build K-12 mathematics instructional capacity on Kaua‘i through this five-year professional development project. KCC will work with local elementary and middle schools to support teacher learning and growth over a three-year period. This collaboration will focus on promoting Native Hawaiian student equity culture in mathematics curricula through 3 objectives:

  1. Increase the knowledge and quality of of mathematics instruction through professional development and mentorship program for at least 15 Kaua‘i K-12 teachers that focuses on improving conceptual understanding of mathematics
  2. Develop and improve place-based, culturally appropriate curriculum, assessments, and rubrics for five elementary grade levels
  3. Build high quality mathematics pathways for grades K-8 to achieve alignment with high school, dual credit mathematics, and reduce the need for remedial instruction. This preparation will create equitable access for Native Hawaiian students’ successful matriculation to postsecondary education.

We have partnered with the following schools to create a Math Hui with participating K-12 educators and to hold workshops to further advance STEM education for K-12 teachers on Kaua‘i.

  • Kanuikapono Public Charter School
  • Kapa‘a Middle School
  • Kapa‘a Elementary School
  • Kawaikini Public Charter School
